Captain Salaria was an intelligent student, and he completed his early education in Jalandhar. Later, he moved to Lucknow to pursue his graduation. He joined the National Defence Academy in Pune after completing his graduation.
Military Career:
Captain Salaria joined the Indian Army after completing his training at the National Defence Academy. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment. Captain Salaria was a brave soldier who always put his nation’s interests before his own. He was deployed in the Congo under the United Nations peacekeeping mission in 1960. Later, in 1961, he was deployed in the Chamb-Jaurian sector during the Indo-Pak war.
Heroic Act:
During the Indo-Pak war in 1961, Captain Salaria was serving in the Chamb-Jaurian sector. On 5 December 1961, he was leading his platoon in an attack on an enemy position. During the attack, he was hit by a burst of machine gun fire. Despite being injured, Captain Salaria continued to advance and was hit again. He was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries.
Honors and Awards:
Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor, for his bravery and sacrifice. He is the only soldier from the Indian Army to receive this honor during the Indo-Pak war of 1961. In his honor, a statue was erected in the National Defence Academy, Pune.
Family:
Captain Salaria was survived by his wife, Smt. Asha Salaria, and their two sons, Rajesh and Sanjeev. The Salaria family has donated the Param Vir Chakra medal to the National Defence Academy, Pune, where it is displayed in the war memorial.
