Early Life
MacLeod was born in Mount Kisco (New York) on February 28, 1931. He was given the name George See. His mother Margaret worked at “Reader’s Digest”, while George was an electrician. He was raised in Pleasantville, New York with his younger brother Ronald. He attended Ithaca College after high school and received a bachelor’s in fine arts from it in 1952. After serving in the United States Air Force, he moved to New York City to join Radio City Music Hall. He decided to become an actor during this time and changed his name from Gavin to Gavin.
Career
MacLeod, then 26, made his television debut in 1957 on “The Walter Winchell File.” He had an uncredited role in “The True Story of Lynn Stuart” the next year. He was soon credited in “I Want to Live!” prison drama. Bruce Edwards, the producer and director of NBC’s “Peter Gunn,” noticed him and cast him in the pilot episodes. Lucky.” He was the star of “Operation Petticoat”, alongside Cary Grant, Tony Curtis, and others. He was then cast in “Operation Petticoat” alongside Bing Crosby, and “The Party”, with Peter Sellers.

Soon after, he was cast as Captain Stubing in “The Love Boat.” It was a huge success and was broadcast in over 90 countries between 1977-86. Three Golden Globe Award nominations were made for him.
MacLeod was inspired by his work on “The Love Boat” to become Princess Cruises’ global ambassador in 1986. He was often involved in the launch of new lines for Princess Cruises. After that, he began touring with Michael Learned and appeared in “Love Letters.” Between 1997 and 2003, he also appeared in a variety of stage productions such as “Gigi” or “Copacabana.”
After he struggled with alcoholism in 1987, MacLeod converted from evangelical Christianity to Christianity. His wife eventually divorced him. They reconciled and had a successful career together as hosts on Trinity Broadcasting Network’s “Back on Course” show. Together, they also co-authored a book called “Back on Course”: The Remarkable History of a Divorce That Ends in Remarriage. MacLeod was also a part of a variety of Christian films. Death and Personal Life
MacLeod first met Joan F. Rootvik while working as an elevator operator at Radio City Music Hall. Rootvik was a Rockettes dancer. They fell in love and were married in 1955. They had two children together, but they eventually divorced in 1972. In 1974, he married Patti Kendig. MacLeod was a struggling alcoholic during their marriage. The couple also had other problems that eventually led to them divorcing. After becoming evangelical Protestant Christians, MacLeod and MacLeod remarried in 1985. Their faith is what brought them back together, they say. They had two more children together.
MacLeod, 90, died in Palm Desert, California, on May 20, 2021. He is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Cathedral City.
