Early Life
Geraldine Chaplin was the fourth child of actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin, and his wife Oona O’Neill. She was born in Santa Monica on July 31, 1944. She went on vacation to Europe with her family while she was still young. The federal order that prohibited Chaplin’s father from returning to the United States made it impossible for the family to return to the United States. They ended up moving to Switzerland. Chaplin was able to learn French and Spanish at a boarding school.

Career Beginnings
Chaplin, at the age of 17, decided to leave college to pursue a career as a dancer. She continued her studies in ballet in England and professional dance in France. She quit ballet soon after and began modeling.
Film Career, Part 1
Chaplin’s first big screen appearance was in an uncredited role in “Limelight,” her father’s 1952 film. After her debut role as Tonya Gromeko, in David Lean’s historical epic “Doctor Zhivago”, she didn’t return to film acting again until 1965. Chaplin also appeared that year in Jacques Deray’s crime film, “Crime on a Summer Morning.” Later, she was in films like “We’ll Go to the City,” I Killed Rasputin,” and “Stranger in the House.” She also appeared in “Stranger in the House” with her father’s “A Countess From Hong Kong.” Chaplin was the star of “Peppermint Frappe,” a psychological thriller that Carlos Saura directed in 1967. She starred in “Stress is Three” (the last of the Saura films) and “Honeycomb” (the final film).

Chaplin also played the role of Hannah, her grandmother, in “Chaplin,” a biographical film that won her a Golden Globe nomination.
