His professional career began at College Football Newsweekly and Pro Football Newsweekly. In 1982, Mike was hired as a researcher by CBS Sports. Mike Francesa, the second of three children of Marilyn and Michael, was born in Long Beach on March 20, 1954. John is his older brother. Marty, his younger brother, committed suicide in the early 1990s. His mother divorced the family while Francesa was still young. He attended Maria Regina High School as a teenager. Francesa graduated from high school and enrolled at the University of South Florida. He stayed there for a year before moving to St. John’s University, Queens. He graduated in 1977 after studying communications and athletic administration.
Career Starts at CBS Sports
Francesa joined CBS Sports in 1982 as an editorial assistant and researcher. His knowledge impressed network executives so much that they appointed him as a studio analyst to cover college basketball and football games. Francesa resigned from CBS Sports in April 1993 after a little more than a decade.
Mike and the Mad Dog
Francesa applied eagerly for a job as a host at WFAN, a New York City radio station that was founded in 1987. Francesa was not an experienced broadcaster so he was offered a job in production. He declined. Francesa persevered in his search and eventually got a job as a weekend host for college basketball and football coverage. He also served as a guest host for a variety of shows. Due to his success, Francesa was partnered with host Ed Coleman for a show during the morning-to-mid-afternoon slot. He was then chosen to replace Pete Franklin in the afternoon drive time slot in 1989. Francesa was also co-host of Mike and the Mad Dog with Chris Russo.

From 2008 to 2014, the show was broadcast simultaneously on both the YES Network and Fox Sports 1. Francesa’s contract was terminated in September 2015 due to turbulent relations with the network. Francesa announced his intention to return to WFAN just four months after he announced his retirement from WFAN. Personal life
Francesa was married to Kate in 1983. They divorced in 1994. Rose was Francesa’s wife in 2000. They have a son, Harrison, and fraternal twins Jack and Emily. Francesa resides in Manhasset, New York, and South Florida.
Francesa has a number of horses that he has raced with through his JEH Racing Stable. His horse High Oak won the Grade II Saratoga Special Stakes in 2021. Francesa and Lee Einsidler teamed up again the following year to win the Grade I Fourstardave Handicap together with their horse Casa Creed.
