Controversies • In 2018, the song titled ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ from his Malayalam film ‘Oru Adaar Love’ received criticism and some alleged that the lyrics and the video of the song hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community; a complaint against the song was filed in Hyderabad. The director dismissed the allegations and pointed out that allegations were pointless and uncalled for. Later, in an interview, he pointed out that the song which was popular in the Malabar region of Kerala shared the message of ‘love beyond borders.’ [2]
• Some reports suggested that the director and Priya Prakash Varrier were not on talking terms after the actress became famous. In an interview, he alleged that the actors started interfering with the script of the Malayalam film ‘Oru Adaar Love’ after they became famous; according to many reports the director was forced to shoot a new climax and the film ended up as a box-office flop. [3]
In 2019, he landed in trouble after he used a Shaktimaan reference in his Malayalam film Dhamaka without prior permission. Mukesh Khanna who played the role of Shaktimaan alleged that the director used the Shaktimaan reference without his permission and filed a complaint with FEFKA; he alleged that he was not notified of the use of the character and accused Omar of using his character without gaining copyright. On 4 October 2019, he allowed the Dhamaka team to use the Shaktimaan reference in the movie. [4]
• In 2022, he shared multiple posts on social media about the closing of hotels in Kerala during the month of Ramadan; he alleged that he was not able to eat his favorite foods and suggested that the owners should place a board in their shops which says ‘food here is aimed at Muslims only’. His comments were heavily criticized by many and they labeled him as a BJP and RSS sympathizer.
• In July 2022, derogatory posts and screenshots appeared on the director’s Facebook profile which targeted the Malayalam actor and director Soubin Shahir. After a defamatory post was uploaded from his profile the director took it down immediately and clarified that he or his team were unaware of the incident and apologized to the actor and the public. Later, Omar shared a post on Facebook and alleged that someone tried to hack his account. [5]
• In January 2023, his film ‘Nalla Samayam’ was withdrawn from the theatres after three days. The Kozhikode Excise Inspector registered a case against the director and producer of the movie for allegedly promoting the use of MDMA in the teaser of the film. Omar and the producer were charged under Abkari Act and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. There were allegations and heavy criticism against the teaser of the movie and many complained that it promoted the use of drugs and other banned substances in the film. Angeline Mariya who was part of the film made some comments encouraging the use of MDMA after the premiere of the movie.
