Controversy Arrested for the Call Data Record Scam: Reportedly, Rajani Pandit was arrested in the call data record scam by Thane police on 2 February 2018. [10] According to sources, Rajani was released from the Thane Central Jail on 14 March 2018 after 40 days in police custody. [11] According to the reports, Rajani Pandit was holding call record details and might be using them for extortion; [12] however, other investigators, who were in the custody of police for the same, claimed that Rajani was their supporter. [13] In an interview, Rajani Pandit mentioned obtaining call records as part of any private investigator’s job and said,
“Is it wrong to access something readily available, especially when one doesn’t know about its legality? A private detective is supposed to help people. For that, the proof is needed. So many times, we procure proof by invading people’s privacy. It is a tightrope we walk.” [14]

  • Rajani Pandit is an Indian private detective who is called the first female private investigator in India. She has solved more than 75000 cases related to personal, corporate, and employment investigations. [16]
  • In an interview, Rajani Pandit revealed that her first stint as a detective was when she was pursuing her graduation in 1983. [17] According to her, she noticed something unusual in the behavior of one of her classmates. Rajani resolved to get to the depth of it and found her classmate to be engaged in sexual activities. In an interview, she talked about this and said,

    It all happened during those days when I was busy with my studies in college. One day, I found one of my classmates acting in a suspicious manner. She was going with a group of eight or nine boys. I chased her and when she went in a hostel with the boys, I came to know that she was trapped in the business of prostitution. I informed her parents, who initially did not accept it, but later thanked me for informing them. It was they who suggested that I become a detective.” [18]

  • According to Rajani, she helped a reporter who came seeking her help to investigate a man to whom his sister was married. The reporter had an anonymous letter that read that the said man was already married; however, Rajani kept an eye on that man and tried to be friends with him, and she later found that he had a wife and family in Jargaon in Uttar Pradesh, India. Rajani added that she visited the family and got to know that the man had left his family and first wife because he had no good relations with them. According to Rajani, this case gave her publicity, and soon, she started getting recognized as the first female private detective in India. [21]
  • Rajani Pandit was first interviewed with ‘Hum Bhi Kisi Se Kam Nahi.’ [22]
  • As stated by Rajani, the ‘double murder case’ that she solved in 1980 was very challenging and complicated. According to Rajani, she had to find the prime accused of a double murder of a husband and a son for which she lived in the house of the murderer for almost six months as a housemaid. [23] According to Rajani, she was almost exposed as the woman heard the sound of the tape recorder that Rajani was using; the tape recorder would make a sound once the recording is done. [24]
  • In 1991, Rajani established an agency named the ‘Rajani Pandit Detective Services,’ providing a private eye for every possible case across India. According to sources, the agency was operated from Parekh Mahal in Shivaji Park, Mumbai, and later, it was shifted to Mahendra Mansion in Shivaji Park, Mumbai. [25]

    In the beginning, I used to place advertisements in newspapers to get business. People from Delhi Doordarshan interviewed me after seeing one such advertisement. It gave me a nationwide exposure. I worked for all. Politicians, businessmen and Bollywood stars were regulars. My work ethic of not exploiting them with the information I possessed helped me in getting more clients.” [26]
